History and developement

The beginning was set in 1938
A state owned experimental terpene plant with ten workers has been established in that year. The aim was to develop resin extraction from the woods, and also to start production of rosin and turpentine.

In 1949 “Crystal Chemicals” is established as an enterprise for production of rosin, turpentine, tar and pine oil.

In 1949 “Extraction” plant, the only one of it’s kind on the Balkans, for processing of pine stumps and production of extraction rosin, extraction turpentine and flotation oil, has been constructed and set into operation.

In 1967 a new plant for processing of sulfate turpentine into terpineol, technical turpentine, flotation oil and pure terpine-hydride has been set into operation.

1969. A four column deep-vacuum rectification plant on highest technical and technological level for processing of crude tall oil into tall rosin, tall fatty acids and light oils has been constructed under Swedish license from ‘Lander patent’. The production line of the plant has been increased thereafter.

In 1972 the plant for production of light powdery glue for the paper industry, which is under Austrian technology and on highest technological level, has been set into operation. The factory becomes a main producer of powdery glue on the Balkans and in East Europe and is the third biggest producer in Europe after Germany and Austria.

In 1974 the first production of furan resins for the Bulgarian metallurgy has been established. In next years the production line of furan resins has been increasing permanently to meet the high requirements of modern metallurgy.

In 1978 a line for production of pasteboard for packing was established.

In 1986 a successful regular production of phenol resins was set into operation.

In 1989 a vacuum-rectification column for production of pure terpenes has been purchased from Austria and set into operation.

In 1997 a major reconstruction and modernization of the terpene and tall oil plants has been accomplished. This technological renovation makes possible the production of new types of terpene products and the improvement of the quality of fatty acid and rosin products.
In 1998 a production of perfumery terpineol on the basis of rectification of crude terpineol was set into operation.

In 1998 production of liquid paper size for use in cellulose and paper producing industry for production of various paper products has been carried out.

In 1999-2000 production of alkyd resin on the basis of distilled tall oil fatty acids and distilled vegetable oil fatty acids was established. Production of paints, varnishes, oils for wood and primers for consumer use on the basis of alkyd resin was initiated.

In 2001 production of interior and exterior paints and road marking was established.
Today “Crystal Chemicals” is a privately owned Bulgarian joint stock company. The production line of “Crystal Chemicals” is unique for Bulgaria and on the Balkans.
“Crystal Chemicals” is currently maintaining international trade relations with business entities from Europe, Asia and America.
